Technology in the Classroom
Technology can be a
powerful tool in the classroom when implemented with a purpose. A number of technological resources can
be utilized to enhance lessons, while on the other end drill and practice
programs tend to elicit the feeling of using a computer simply for the sake of
using a computer. Just as any
traditional lesson in a classroom focuses on the learning outcome as well as
the journey a student takes to arrive at that outcome, lessons that incorporate
technology should do the same.
Teachers should try to “avoid adding technology…to generate a more
snazzy result” (Ashburn & Floden, 2006, p. 32). By using technology to support a lesson, students can
present their work beyond the classroom walls to a more authentic
audience. This application into a
real-world setting can help add relevance and meaning to student work (Ashburn &
Floden, 2006) (while also providing students with the by-product of becoming
more versed in digital literacy).
I have researched a variety of uses for technology based enhancements in
the classroom and have found three to be of particular interest as they relate
to literacy instruction: blogs, podcasts, and e-pals. Please click the tabs above for details about each topic.
